Ankle instability is inability of the ankle joint to work within the
hinge like construct of the dome of the talus, the medial or tibial
malleolus, and the lateral or fibular malleolus creating motion that
deviates significantly from pure up and down motion of the foot at
the ankle. Instability can be classified as acute, chronic, medial,
or lateral instabilities.
Acute instability is seen immediately after an ankle trauma
where supporting ligaments are ruptured. Chronic instability
occurs when ligaments heal in an elongated fashion or when
they lack appropriate innervation that provides information
on ankle joint position.
