Charcot Foot is a rare complication of severe peripheral
neuropathy that can result in destructive changes to the
bones, joints, and soft tissues of the foot. Peripheral
Neuropathy is defined as damage or disease affecting
the longest nerves to the extremities. Nerve damage
can manifest as loss of pain, loss of protective sensation,
and loss of position sense to the feet. This most frequently
seen in the United States as a Complication of Diabetes,
but it can also be seen as a complication of alcoholism,
syphilis, drug abuse, HIV, Parkinson’s Disease, and
leprosy less frequently.
