In the past minimal incision surgery or (MIS) represented
small incision direct approaches where the bony prominence
or bunion was removed with the placement of a small bone
burr beneath the skin directly around “the bunion”.
Initial efforts did not address the deforming forces. The
procedure simply reduced the size of the bony prominence
in question. Initial MIS efforts were often plagued by the
unfortunate consequence of recurrence due to failure to
address the primary cause of the bunion deformity. This
led to initial MIS techniques falling into general disfavor
with mainstream podiatry and orthopedic practices.
