Dr. Stephen Wilkinson is joining Platte River Foot and Ankle Surgeons in the new Gretna office. Dr. Wilkinson and his wife Robin are high school sweethearts who grew up in a small farming community in Northeast Maryland and for them moving to Gretna feels like coming home.
Dr. Wilkinson graduated from Western Maryland College with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and then graduated from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, first in his class, in 1990. He did his surgical residency training at Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis, Washington. He is board certified by The American Board of Podiatric Surgery and a Fellow of the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons.
Dr. Wilkinson has been practicing for 31 years, first in the United States Army as a surgical resident and then Chief of Podiatry and Residency Director at Fort Lewis, Washington State, training podiatry and orthopedic residents in foot and ankle surgery. There he helped develop a multi-disciplinary diabetic limb salvage clinic, the first of its kind of Madigan Army Medical Center. Dr. Wilkinson was also stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina as Chief of Podiatry, treating basic trainees and military service members and their families. After honorably discharging from the military Dr. Wilkinson and his wife and daughter moved back to Maryland’s Eastern Shore to the small rural town of Cambridge and practiced there for 22 years. When their daughter moved to Colorado for work, they decided to follow her! After practicing in Colorado for several years they decided to pack up and go on another adventure! Dr. Waters and Platte River Foot and Ankle Surgeons was a perfect fit!
Dr. Wilkinson specializes in clinical and surgical podiatry, diabetic foot care, as well as biomechanics and sports-related optimization and training. Dr. Wilkinson has been an ultra-runner since he was a teenager, running many 50-mile and 100-mile races. He has participated in Grindstone 100 in Virginia three times, the Delaware 100 and has participated in 100-mile races in Oregon, California, Colorado and Minnesota. This unique skill set allows Dr. Wilkinson to help athletes define goals, train for competition and manage injuries to return to competition as quickly as possible.
For many years Dr. Wilkinson was a consultant to local high school cross country and track teams, helping manage injuries and returning student athletes back to competition. He worked on many Iron Man Competitions in the medical tent caring for athletes. He and his wife also put on many 5K/50mile races at their home. The race was affectionately known as the Pain in The Neck and drew runners from around the country yearly. These races were all donation-only races and raised over $8000 over six years for their local breast cancer support group as well as a local family dealing with pediatric cancer.
Dr. Wilkinson and his wife are avid hikers, enjoy wildlife photography, and exploring national parks and wildlife reserves as well as the communities they live in. They both look forward to becoming a part of the Gretna community and caring for patients with care and compassion.
